Psalm 11

In Psalm 11, King David reflects on the counsel of others to flee from the threat of would-be assassins lurking in the shadows of his own palace. But even more than David’s life being in danger, the very foundations of society have been disrupted by this national emergency (v. 3). Despite the counsel offered, David considers that to flee his throne for his own safety will mean further disruption and destruction of society. Therefore, he consoles himself not with plans to escape, but in his hope in the Lord.

Lord, we give you thanks for those in our society who (like King David) have dutifully manned their posts, even at personal risk, to uphold and protect our society. We thank you especially for our medical personnel, who are on the front lines of facing the coronavirus enemy. We pray for their wellbeing. We thank you also for our governing leaders, who are working together for the good of our society. We pray you would grant them wisdom as they lead us.

Lord, we now know what it feels like when the foundations of society have been disrupted. Let our experience help us appreciate Psalm 11 all the more. And let it help us appreciate you, our one true King, all the more as well. For though David persevered in service though warned of his possible death in the line of duty, you, Lord Jesus, persevered though warned of your certain death in the line of duty. To save us, you would not need merely to risk your life. You would have to give it up. Because of your love for us, you paid that ultimate price so that we could be saved. Hallelujah! Amen.
