Psalm 115

Updated: Aug 24, 2020

Believers in God have sometimes been called atheists because we worship a God who is spirit, and as such is invisible. Therefore the nations declare: "Where is their God?" (Psalm 115:2). They worship lifeless idols fashioned by the hands of man (v. 4-7). Their idols have ears, but cannot hear their prayers. Their idols have mouths, but cannot answer them. They have feet, but cannot go with them. They have hands, but cannot reach out to help them. The Holy Spirit has neither ears nor mouth, neither hands nor feet, but he always sees and hears us, always goes with us, and always helps us in our need. He isn't fashioned by human hands, but our God has created all things. So, in whom will you put your trust?

Lord, you are like the wind that blows where it pleases. The human eye cannot see the wind, but we can see the tree branches and leaves sway in the breeze. We can't see you, but we know you're as real as the wind, because we see what you accomplish in our lives and in our world. We experience your rich, steadfast love and faithfulness (v. 1). We experience your help and protection, surrounding us like a shield (v. 9-11).

We thank you for the gift of faith you've given us, O Lord, and we pray: increase it. Grant that our belief in you might be as steadfast as our belief in wind. Grant not only belief, but trust. Even more than the loyal, loving people we trust most in this life, we can trust you, because you are more loyal and loving, and your power is perfect. We pray in Jesus' name, amen.
