Psalm 121

"I lift up my eyes to the hills.

From where does my help come?

My help comes from the Lord,

who made heaven and earth."

(Psalm 121:1-2)

Good and Gracious Father, this psalm is a comfort to us in our need. It reminds us that you are our ever-present help in times of trouble. It reminds us of your loving compassion, that you are willing to come to our aid, time and time again, whenever we should be in need. It reminds us of your availability to help: you never slumber or sleep, and so are always ready to rescue us. It reminds us of your all-surpassing power and intellect: you designed the entire universe and fine-tuned the earth to be a perfect home for us. Not too much heat and not too little, not too much carbon dioxide and not too little, not too much gravity and not too little, and on and on and on. All the heavens and the earth were fashioned by your hands.

We pray, O Lord, be our help again. For the situations that are bogging us down and waylaying us, we pray for deliverance. Come to our rescue. Save us, O Lord. Spirit, stir in us, that we might always know that our God is as close as a heavenward glance, and as close as a prayer in our heart. Lord, you are all around us, and always here for us. We praise you, in Jesus' name, amen.
