Psalm 128

Updated: Sep 8, 2020

Ordinarily, those who labor see returns on their work, and enjoy provision enough for themselves, for their families, and at times, enough to share with others as well. Ordinarily, those who marry see their family grow, and enjoy the Lord's blessing of children. Ordinarily, those who live well enjoy long life, living to see and enjoy even the gift of grandchildren. These are the blessings described in Psalm 128.

Lord, this happy psalm of blessing can bring pain to those of us who are living faithfully but not seeing the blessings that ordinarily accompany faithfulness. Why is it that we work hard but sometimes still are in need? Why is it that our best efforts aren't always successful? Why is it that our families don't grow as we desire? Why is it that we face health concerns that threaten our prospect of a long and happy life?

Lord, we lament the absence of these good things from our lives. We lament the absence of adequate provision. We lament the absence of the spouse, or children, or grandchildren that we desire. We lament the absence of health and the peace of mind assuring us of a long life.

As we lament, Lord, we also pray for your blessing. Shower your blessings on us, not because we deserve them, but simply because you love us. Simply because you are merciful. No matter what blessings come our way, O Lord, we do trust you, and we believe that you give us (and will continue to give us) what we need. Even when we long for more, when we look to the cross and remember what you endured to provide for us, we are reminded that you do love us. Even when we long for more, when we look to your Word and remember your promises for our future, we are reminded to be patient. You will provide for us beyond what we can even now imagine.

Lord, even while we lament the blessings absent from our life, and even while we pray for these blessings to come, we also pause to praise you and thank you for the many gifts you have given us. You are good, O Lord, and our lives truly are marked by the blessings of your loving care. In Jesus' name, we pray, amen.
