Psalm 17

“Wondrously show your steadfast love, O Savior of those who seek refuge from their adversaries at your right hand. Keep me as the apple of your eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings” (Psalm 17:7-8).

Lord of life and lover of our soul, we pray that we might find rest in your wondrous, steadfast love. David rested in you, even while afflicted by his adversaries and their threats. He imagined your love to be like that of a mother bird, spreading her wings over her young, to shade them from the blazing sun, or shield them from would-be predators. He prayed: “Keep me as the apple of your eye; keep me as your most cherished possession; love me like a mother loves her young.”

Lord, we confess that far too often our mood is rooted in our circumstances. When things are going well for us, we are happy. When things are challenging, we get frustrated and upset. But you offer us a joy which transcends our circumstances. You offer us your presence and love which gives us something to rejoice in through every storm. So even as we pray for your aid, let us rejoice afresh today in your many blessings, in your rich love, in you, our Savior and our God. In Jesus’ name, amen.
