“Lead me in your truth and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; for you I wait all the day long. Remember your mercy, O LORD, and your steadfast love, for they have been from of old. Remember not the sins of my youth or my transgressions; according to your steadfast love remember me, for the sake of your goodness, O LORD!” (Psalm 25:5-7)
Lord, sometimes we see righteousness and repentance as an either/or. Either we’re perfect, or we sin and say sorry. Yet your Word calls us to both righteousness and repentance. Yes, we have sinned, and we do need your forgiveness. But forgiveness is not all we need. We need to be transformed. Therefore, we join David in praying: “Lead me in your truth and teach me.”
O Lord, teach us to know right from wrong. Our world teaches us what is right is what we want and what feels good, but you teach us that sometimes what is right involves sacrifice and is hard. Lord, let us not give in to the lie of following our heart, when we should be seeking to follow your heart. You teach us that our hearts our easily deceived, and easily turn toward selfishness instead of love. So we pray: Lord, let us follow your heart. Only your heart is perfectly loving and true all of the time. Be our guide. Lead us in your ways; lead us in the paths of righteousness. In Jesus’ name we pray, amen.
