“Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him! Oh, fear the LORD, you his saints, for those who fear him have no lack! The young lions suffer want and hunger, but those who seek the LORD lack no good thing” (Psalm 34:8-10).
How amazing, O Lord, are your words to us. Lions are symbols of superior strength, and the lion is even designated “king of the jungle” and “king of the beasts.” Anyone who has heard a lion roar won’t soon forget it. And yet, despite all their strength, lions cannot guarantee their young food. Lions are more powerful than many other creatures, but they don’t compare to you. You are not merely “more powerful”, you are all-powerful. You speak, and all creation obeys your word, whether it’s a storm being stilled by your word, or whether it’s a few loaves multiplying to feed a crowd of a few thousand, everything in all of creation obeys your word.
So when you promise to provide for us, oh what joy should fill our hearts! Finally, we don’t have to depend upon our earnings or our savings anymore, and we don’t have to depend upon ourselves or our spouses (or parents). Yes, we still work hard, and save up, and help our families and each other, but at the end of the day our provision doesn’t depend upon our effort or wisdom, but upon you. It doesn’t depend on the help of any other person, but upon your help, your infinite power, and your steadfast love. Though even lion cubs suffer want, we who seek you will not lack any good thing. Let us delight in this truth. Let us ever grow in our trust in you, in our experience of your faithfulness, and in our love for you. In Jesus’ name, amen.
