Psalm 47

Writer's picture: AlexAlex

Psalm 47 overflows with praise for God, the majestic king of glory. It exhorts us to clap our hands, shout with joy, and five times calls for us to sing praises to God.

Lord, it is good to sing your praises.

Yes, we pray for relief from the coronavirus pandemic.

Yes, we pray for racism to be upended and justice to be established forever.

Yes, we pray that your peace would reign between protesters and police, and that bystanders and journalists would also be kept from harm.

Yes, we pray for our political leaders serving our country: may their leadership promote the well-being and peace of every person.

But even as we pray, this psalm reminds us also to praise. The injustice, the disunity, and the suffering we see all around us breaks our hearts. But when we look to you and see your awesome power, your perfect righteousness, your amazing grace, your bountiful compassion, and your absolute justice our hearts are reminded how to hope again. We remember that the Day of Judgment is coming. Your holiness will fill the earth, and all evil will be driven out forever, even the evil lingering in our own hearts. Your perfectly just laws (to love God with all your heart, and to love your neighbor as yourself) will be the only laws of the land. Everything will be perfect forever. God, you are so good. We praise you for who you are, for all you’ve done, for all you’re doing, and for all you will do! In Jesus’ name, amen.
