Psalm 5

“But let all who take refuge in you rejoice; let them ever sing for joy, and spread your protection over them, that those who love your name may exult in you. For you bless the righteous, O LORD; you cover him with favor as with a shield” (Psalm 5:11-12).

Lord, in these days we might take refuge inside our virus-free homes, seek the protection of sanitizers spread over our hands, and seek to be covered by face masks and latex gloves. While it is good for us to take precautions not to contract COVID-19 or unknowingly spread it, grant that our ultimate security might rest not in our physical health, but in you, O Lord. Grant that we might come to understand David’s words, when he wrote: “Your love is better than life” (Psalm 63:3). Then you truly will be our refuge, and our hearts will be filled with such joy that we’ll always be on the verge of singing. Of course, O Lord, we pray also: do spread your protection over us. Please cover us with your favor as with a shield. We rest ourselves in you, O Lord, our redeemer and the sustainer of all life. Amen.
